"Came out and did the sunrise climb, as that was our only option to get this in before our cruise left that afternoon. Be advised you do need a permit in advance.
+'s: Easy trail to follow and a short family-friendly hike, great views (sunrise was amazing), weather was perfect in the morning
-'s: Lots of people (trail could charitably be called a highway), trail etiquette is largely non-existent
To be fair, many of the people left after the sunrise was complete, so if you're willing/able to wait that out the crowds should be less. Still glad we did it." — Henriettaheroes • Mar 1, 2025
"I hiked Diamond Head with Craig in May of 2017, and then after mom passed away I decided to get dad out of dodge after Xmas so we headed back to Waikiki. Then I came back with Cole early in the morning. He wanted to run up, so we ran from our hotel and I got as far up as I could before he came back down. " — 40in40 • May 3, 2017
"We had a couple hours to spare on our last day in Hawaii, so we decided to do the touristy thing & hike to the top of Diamond Head. The 'hike' was horrible. There were so many people, it was gross. The views were absolutely amazing, though!" — Kevin • Jun 9, 2015
"After checking in to our hotel and a quick Sushi lunch, my wife and I went straight to the crater, looking forward to spectacular views. The entrance, tunnels and installations on the way up were as impressive as the views on top. I did not know before this hike that there is a massive underground fire department built into the side of the crater.

"Fairly easy trip up. Stunning views! We added 4 miles by walking from the beginning of Wiakiki Beach up to Diamond Head. It was cool walking from the center of the city up to the caldera then up to the rim of the crater. It was our first time to Hawaii and def a trip to remember." — Amero4k • Oct 17, 2011
