"Hitchhiked out here on a wild day trip from Kihei HI, because the POSER family didn't want to do this one with me. Started in Kihei town's rich area at the turn where the Makena Alanui becomes a highway, then made my way to Kahului, where I met up with a fellow tourist from South Africa, Kelvin, to do this hike with me. Then we made our way to the trailhead and started climbing up through the forest, and with more switchbacks, nice views of the surrounding valleys emerged. Then I made my way higher up as I climbed into the clouds at the plateau near the summit. Then after enjoying the narrow "backbone" section I climbed through the tree forest and reached the summit area and touched in Lanilli Benchmark at the top, which came in and out of the clouds. Then drove back to Makamakaole Stream for the next hike of the day! " — lc444 • Jun 25, 2026
"Started a bit late at 3pm. Parked in the overflow lot to make sure the car didn’t get locked in if we came back after 7pm. We could’ve got back in time but we hung out at the lookouts for a while and got back after dark. Hiking w headlamps was easy. A few mud spots and slips but generally was a fine trail." — dylanharris • Nov 28, 2022
"I started at the trailhead at 11 Am and I expected it to be crowded but it was almost empty because of the heavy cloud layer. It was disappointing at the summit of Lanilili and Kanoa Ridge because it was very cloudy. I just realized it was normal." — lcnguyen • Mar 1, 2022
"A bit overcast, but dry, with the tropical humidity. Had a good view of North and Upcountry Maui, despite the cloud cover. Trail is a bit popular, and worth the visit. Didn't get to see much from the peak, but an overly friendly mongoose kept me entertained. This guy came up very close as soon as he heard the wrapper crinkle on my bar. Please don't feed the wild animals, it's not good for them.
PS: carry out what you bring in...found t.p. on the trail...gross!" — colleenmarie512 • Apr 26, 2021
"Went early in the morning when the ocean shimmered with the rising sun and there were few other hikers on this sometimes busy trail. It's beautiful having these heights all to yourself, and with such fantastic views of the Pacific." — briansnyder • Aug 21, 2013
