"Wanted a local morning hike that I could finish quickly but still get some good exercise. The Johnstone Peak hike seemed to check all the boxes. Wrapped up the hike by 10 AM. I also visited nearby Peak 2990, which is right off the dirt road and south of Johnstone Peak." — MikeTeeples • Nov 1, 2020
"Following a rainy Saturday, I was determined to get in at least one hike for the weekend. Meanwhile, Johnstone Peak was the closest San Gabriel Mountains summit that I haven't climbed yet. Today was the day to check it off. I parked at the end of Terrebonne Avenue in San Dimas, where an access point connects with the fire road. The dirt road to the top was often muddy which meant that I created a bit of a mess on the hike. The incline was rather moderate and led me directly to the high point, where I was standing in the clouds. The only issue was the "No entry without a permit" sign along the way. I'm sure many others turned around at the sight of it. It seemed to me that if I just stuck to the road I was allowed to use it as an easement. This easement took me to the summit, where nobody else was but me. While I was there alone, I declared that I was correct in my assessment that I was allowed to climb past the sign, because it didn't affect anything other than simply letting me finish what I started out to do. Good hike, but on the day views were a bit limited by the cloud cover from the lingering storm clouds." — MikeTeeples • Mar 11, 2018
