"In town at the CDP and had some extra time to explore so we checked out these trails. Started at the Cheaha Parking area (~1970') and enjoyed the easy going trail to Hernandez. The trail from parking is easy but the main trail sign is off a bit, just pay attention to the small wooden sign and blazes - the map calls the Pinhoti Trail as Orange but is actually along the blue blazes. After a few minutes you reach the Cave trail junction, turn right and you'll see a small sign for Pinhoti, follow this to the next junction and turn left toward Hernandez. We reached Hernandez quickly (~ 1.5 miles, 445' of gain) and enjoyed a nearby view place before making a quick drop into the col and then climbing ~215' up to McDill (0.5 miles, 215'). No viewpoint from McDill so we turned around, went back over Hernandez and decided to continue on toward the Comm Towers (1.5 miles, ~445' gain). From there we followed the jeep trail out to the state park entrance and then walked the road back to parking (~1.2 miles). Very nice day on open trails." — deb-and-rob • Feb 11, 2017
