"Hiked Pine Mountain Trail from Hines Gap Road to connecting trail to peak of Dowdell Knob. Not long after we started, we turned back to retrieve forgotten items, then continued to peak, so our mileage is longer than this route. Bug repellent and sun screen are recommended for this route. I estimate 2.5 route mileage with net vertical gain over 320’ and total over 470’ one way." — davidensley • Jun 1, 2022
"Hiked from Dowdell’s Knob overlook parking up to peak, down connecting trail to Pine Mountain Trail to Elephant Rock. Purpose of hike was to explore unmapped trail up beside Elephant Rock. Trail was in good condition up to the ridge line. After a short loop down to an overlook, hiked ridge line back up to connecting trail to peak. First part of ridge line was light bushwhacking to a shiny spot that turned out to be an old trash dump with trash from the 1970s with the pull top cans. From there followed an old road past another decades old dump site. That old road comes out at the old connecting trail that is now marked off for reforestation. By afternoon the fog had cleared for viewing Pine Mountain Valley." — davidensley • Feb 27, 2021
"Hiked from the peak down to Pine Mountain Trail down past plane crash memorial to Elephant Rock, up the side trail past Elephant Rock a ways, then turned and retraced my steps back up to the peak." — davidensley • Mar 21, 2020
