"It was a busy day on the mountain. We watched a paraglider take off.
Two people on horseback gain the summit plus lots of people out enjoying the beautiful weather.
Out for the day with beginner mountain hikers Basma and Hiba. They struggled a little on the icy traverse across the steep slope. Luckily Basma had microspikes and she managed just great. I stayed with Hiba to make sure nothing went wrong. We managed to get across no problem.
We took our time it was a full day. " — Randy • May 22, 2021
"Went north to escape the snow.
Took the southeast ridge up. This was an enjoyable hike on a steep, but benchy trail. Views open up quite early, with great views to the main ranges to the west and plains on the east.
There is one "moderate scrambling" step, but someone installed a ladder, so this can be avoided if you want.
The ridge walk to the false summit was very nice.
Easy decent from the false summit to the col where we rejoined the standard hiking trail. True summit is 1.5 km from the col, but less than 100m gain. Treed. Some snow from the col to the summit block.
Returned down the main hiking trail. This left us with a 3km walk through the Nordgegg suburbs and a 3-4km highway walk to the car. Hitchhiking attempts were unsuccessful. Bring a bike or a second car if doing a loop, but the southeast ridge is so much better (and we had it to ourselves), a loop might be less appealing.
We parked at the old ranger station. This is an official start, but it is 1.5 km from the start of the ridge. There are suitable places to pull off the highway closer to ridge, which will save some flat walking. Bring your gps.
Nice day. " — mike_rogers81 • May 26, 2019
"Took one of my best friends up Coliseum mountain for his first scramble, we went the scramblers route, he was a little nervous during the scramble portion, but we had a great day." — mountaindad • May 20, 2017
"Ridgeline Trail is much more interesting route up Coliseum Mountain than the main trail, especially in the winter. Tough trailbreaking with a few scrambling sections followed by a nice ridgewalk. The final section to the ridgeline is very steep and can be avalanche prone in the winter. The snow was hardened by the wind and sun on that slope. I wished I brought crampons." — Taras • Mar 19, 2017
"Pretty straight forward ascent up the trail (switchbacks). The only thing that caused some discussion was where the true summit was as we had conflicting topo maps. So just to be sure we did both." — BertB • Mar 5, 2016
"On November 9, 2014, four members of the University of Alberta Outdoors club successfully summited Colisuem Mountain despite a heavy snowstorm and whiteout conditions. The summiting party was composed of Trent Gray of Edmonton, Alberta; Andreas Koe of Freidburg, Germany; Michiel Arts of Utrecht, Holland; and Steven Noël of Edmonton, Alberta." — Steven-Noel • Nov 9, 2014
"An extremely popular peak with decent foot traffic and zero OHVs. Blazing hot afternoon Sunday with temperatures hitting 28C by 4:00. After enjoying breakfast at the Pick and Shovel, I managed to get off to an early 9:00 a.m. start and hit the peak just after 12:00. An older man was on the trail already clearing out trees with his chainsaw and axe which made the walk down quite pleasant indeed. While the views are relatively the same as from Shunda Mountain across the valley, I find this peak to be much more enjoyable and peaceful. Nice nap at the summit before returning back to the trailhead around 4:00. Lots of people just starting up as I was heading down which was surprising given the elevation gain and heat though with speed it can be ascended in just under two hours flat." — Mountainman • Jun 30, 2013
