"Warm winter day but not much sunshine. The upper half of the Wapack trail was like a river of ice. Good thing 2-3 inches of snow fell recently. Had enough of a cushion. Spikes were a great idea." — Alohabuffy • Jan 8, 2026
" Nice hike this morning. Started out at 14 degrees in the parking lot and light flurries at 7 a.m. Already 4 or 5 cars in the parking lot, probably from early-birds who wanted to take in the sunrise. Snow on the trail, not enough for snowshoes, but micro spikes were needed for the smooth ice under a thin snow layer. Met no other hikers on the way up to the summit. Summit itself was pretty breezy under an overcast. Eastern horizon was tainted orange but there was no real visible sunrise. Could see Mount Wachusett in the distance but the new north along the Wapack trail was obscured by snow squalls. Stayed on summit just long enough for a drink of hot tea and then off to Nutting Hill.
The trail to nutting hill had more snow but still not enough for snowshoes. One Hemlock had fallen across the trail quite close to the Watatic summit but it was an easy walk-around. Saw two other hikers on Nutting Hill itself and headed quick back to the parking lot which, at 9:15 was almost full with 10 cars. Very nice 2.5 hour hike.

"Mostly cloudy and windy day with temperatures in the 20s. The warm rain from several days prior, followed by the previous night's 3 inches of snow, created deceptively treacherous conditions where the entire trail was covered in a sheet of ice hidden by a thin layer of powder. I set off from the Miller State Park main entrance just after 11:15am and started up the Marion Davis Trail. The first quarter of the trail is nearly flat, followed by a short section where the elevation makes small dips and climbs. The last half of the trail is a more consistent climb but still punctuated by small flat sections. Despite the ice, I bare-booted the entire way, following some fresh tracks. I had also brought a new pair of snowshoes, but the snow base was too shallow to properly use them. I was protected from the wind for the climb, but I was hit with a snowy gust as soon as I reached the summit. I got some pictures of the other southern New Hampshire mountains from a small picnic area to the northwest of the summit, then began the descent. I put on microspikes immediately, but even then I slipped multiple times on the icy Wapack Trail. Because of the ice, the descent took a little longer than a..." — JCalautti • Dec 24, 2025
"Checking out some more of the Wapack Trail. Some nice outlooks coming up from Temple Rd. Beautiful old stone wall runs along the trail for quite a distance. A biting NW wind tried to ruin an otherwise sunny day.
