"Brutal trailrun in 97° heat blast. Felt like running inside a microwave oven. Almost turned back a couple times when heartrate was pounding on totally flat sections and experienced heat goosebumps." — scott • Oct 7, 2023
"This is the morning route I do 1 to 2 times per week to get the blood flowing before work. I expecially like it here as it challenges me to get on the trail at 7am when they open, and be off the trail in time to get home, take a shower, and be at work by 9:15am. This means I need to hike up fast and run down. So much fun and very rewarding! Today it was bitter cold...and I was dumb enough to leave my jacket at home. " — jeffreybossaller • Feb 22, 2023
"Out for a morning hike to the top of Taylor Mountain. It's definitely beautiful up here. Once you reach the top you run into fenced off private property just before the summit. You are however within feet of the summit." — jeffreybossaller • Jan 19, 2023
"Had a short time window to go for a doubleheader... first Hood Mountain then Bald Mountain, both featured in the SF Bay Area Classic Peaks challenge.
Started out at 11:30 on the Goodspeed Trail on the edge of Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. Easy, steady climb up to the park boundary. Things get a bit steeper on the Nattkemper Trail as it crosscuts and switchbacks its way through meadows and oak woodlands. The final climb to the summit of Hood is moderate and before you know it... you're on the broad, viewless summit. Bummer. But wait... there's a fairly obvious secret up here: look for a tiny spur to the south and find a short rock pinnacle that affords a view for one.
Definitely don't miss the .2 mile spur to the Gunsight Rock Overlook for the best Sonoma Valley views of the day." — scott • Nov 6, 2015
"Part 2 of a doubleheader with Hood Mountain to chip away at the SF Bay Area Classic Peaks challenge.
After finishing the Hood hike and wolfing down a banana and an apple, I felt recharged for the 2nd objective of the day. Started out on the scenic Lower Bald Mountain Trail that switchbacks through some incredible oak woodlands. Unfortunately this leads to the far less scenic paved Bald Mountain Trail (road!) that gets you up most of the way to the col between Red Mountain and Bald Mountain. From there a steeper fireroad climb takes you up to the summit through the best views of the route.
This peak cements its status as a Classic Peak with the incredible 360 summit views... could see back to Mt Tam and Diablo to the south, west to the Pacific, north to Mt St Helena and of course excellent views of the viewless Hood Mountain where I'd been a few hours earlier.
On the way down took a quick 5 min detour up Red Mountain... don't waste your energy unless you like microwave towers.
Then it was down pavement almost all the way... your knees will love it.
