"Got a mid morning start on Buffalo Mountain (12,777’). Started with a skin up 3,400’ feet. As we popped out of the treeline around 12,000’ the winds kicked in and the temps dropped. I topped out on the summit before dropping into Silver Couloir.
Silver Couloir on Buffalo Mountain is a classic ski line and avalanche scar located in Silverthorne, Colorado. Many consider this line one of the 50 classics in North America. This northeast facing couloir lasts for about 3,000ft and maxes out around 40-45°.
Silver Couloir is no joke and prone to avalanche. My poor alpine form had my quads on fire on every turn. At one point I put too much weight on my tails and blew a DIN on my bindings sending my ski sailing down the chute 200 yards or so. I had to glissade down to retrieve it. At the bottom of the chute we tucked back into the woods and transitioned back to skinning for another 500’ vertical feet or so. Tony snapped a ski in half on a log coming through the trees. Big day, flying back east tomorrow. " — wiweasel • Mar 23, 2024

"This was an impromptu decision born out of original plans to meet other hikers going sideways. Since I woke up at 2:30 AM, picked an friend I hadnt seen in 10 years up and drove a few hours away, I had to come up with a backup plan fast. I decided on Buffalo, because it was close by and apparently I had already saved the route on my Gaia app at some point. It was a class 2 over some massive boulderfields on the way up, then a class 3 scramble over to Sacred Buffalo. " — LGH-Dan • Jun 28, 2020
