Got a mid morning start on Buffalo Mountain (12,777’). Started with a skin up 3,400’ feet. As we popped out of the treeline around 12,000’ the winds kicked in and the temps dropped. I topped out on the summit before dropping into Silver Couloir.

Silver Couloir on Buffalo Mountain is a classic ski line and avalanche scar located in Silverthorne, Colorado. Many consider this line one of the 50 classics in North America. This northeast facing couloir lasts for about 3,000ft and maxes out around 40-45°.

Silver Couloir is no joke and prone to avalanche. My poor alpine form had my quads on fire on every turn. At one point I put too much weight on my tails and blew a DIN on my bindings sending my ski sailing down the chute 200 yards or so. I had to glissade down to retrieve it. At the bottom of the chute we tucked back into the woods and transitioned back to skinning for another 500’ vertical feet or so. Tony snapped a ski in half on a log coming through the trees. Big day, flying back east tomorrow.
