"This is in the Rothrock State Forest. I didn't even know that Broad Mountain existed until I reached a long, steep uphill climb while going south on the Standing Stone Trail. There's a derelict fire tower at the summit which tempted me sorely...mostly because you really don't see much through the trees. But the floorboards and stairs looked pretty old and unsafe. The few humble vistas are from the lower flanks of the mountain; the summit is entirely wooded--unlike other local mountains, which have boulder fields on top and nice views.
This would make a nice day hike. From the picnic area at the Alan Seeger Natural Area, it’s only about a mile and a half up the steep side of the mountain to the fire tower at the summit—so a 3-mile round trip. This hike includes a short side trail to a scenic view. But it is steep and slow going! A longer, less steep hike would be from Greenwood Furnace State Park, which is 2.8 miles below the fire tower. There are no views through the trees on this side of the mountain, and a round trip would be about 5 and a half miles. " — briansnyder • Aug 8, 2022
