"Sunday 15th April 2018. An ascent of Brent Tor 334m/130m, near Tavistock, Devon. 1.4km, with 65m of ascent. 0hr 25mins.
Leaving Buckfast in the mid-afternoon, there was little time for a walk. The weather was dreich any way, with a wet gusting south-westerly bringing in frequent showers. I was booked in for two nights in the White Hart Hotel in Okehampton, with a view to doing a big hike on Northern Dartmoor next day, when the army ranges were not in use.
There was time, however, for a brief ascent en route of Brent Tor, and a visit to the church on its summit. Brent Tor is an isolated hill set apart from the western edge of the moor. Its geology is also different, being composed of basaltic rocks extruded into tropical seas in the Carboniferous Period, rather than the granite intrusions of Dartmoor itself.
I parked in the car park provided on the western side of the tor. Crossing the lane, I took to a boggy path that wound round the northern and eastern flanks up to the Church of St. Michael on the summit.
