"I scrambled up to Avalanche Mountain today. The Snow Lake trail has snow still, and all the foot traffic has packed it down pretty hard and slick. Going up the switchbacks to the saddle above Snow Lake has some tricky spots. There were some people at the saddle taking in the view, but no one was going down to the lake. I did see some tracks though. From Snow Lake I turned east and walked up around the south side of the small lakes. The last one has a bit of land and a snow bridge right across the middle of it. I scrambled up to just north of the middle, low-point on the ridge that runs south of Avalanche Mtn. The small lakes as well as Snow Lake itself are still completely covered. There is only a pretty little ring of blue around Snow Lake.
Going straight north along the ridge isn't bad, but there are a few big rocks to get around. At the very top, it is treeless, with a great view all around. This is a worthwhile scramble, and not a trivial climb in the steep parts when you get close to the ridge. Coming down, I stayed at a high elevation, skirting around as far south as possible, back to the Snow Lake Trail. This meant walking on a lot of 40 degree slopes. "This small subpeak of Snoqualmie Mountain provides surprisingly expansive views of the surrounding Cascade Mountains considering it's prominence is barely over 400'. Situated NE of Snow Lake, the shortest approach is via the High Lakes Trail from the Alpental/NWFS Parking Lot. I was a little sore after climbing Mount Townsend with Maverick the day before, so the short approach and reasonable elevation gain as well as a chance to see Snow Lake completely frozen over made this one an easy choice for a clear sunny day. Within the first mile and having seen nobody on the trail I was beginning to regret leaving both dogs behind, but a fair amount of exposure on the narrow ridge to the summit and several off leash dogs on the trail during our descent changed that thought.
Very little snow below 4500' meant that the lifts at Alpental were closed. The parking lot was nearly empty when we arrived at a leisurely 7:30, not a common sight on a fair weather Sunday in January. While gearing up we chatted with two groups of 2 that had pulled in just after us and both mentioned that they would be climbing Chair Peak. At the last switchback before the saddle to Snow Lake we stopped after hearing w..." — Jeb • Jan 5, 2014
