"We looked at 3 different routes that we found and put together a route that looked good to us. I see some possible changes I would make if I was to ascend from Pine Nut Camp again. If I was to take the southern route again that is on the attached track, I would stay in the wash that we were following before we started up the ridge final east ridge line. From above it appeared to be the better route. It will be steep on the final push to the Sheep Peak, but so is the ridge line we took. The exit route we took would also be a good ascent route. At Pine Nut Camp there is a wash down below it. That wash runs all the way up to the saddle between Sheep Peak and North Sheep Peak (Peak 9678). It's an easy, beautiful hike up the wash. There is a large waterfall that you can easily get up by scrambling the rocks to your left, if you're going up. The last little bit, before the saddle, will be steep and a little loose, but no matter what approach you take it is going to be the same. I have done 5 different routes to and from Sheep Peak and really enjoyed our choice of the exit wash on this adventure....which once again, could be used as an approach route. "First time doing this route. It appeared that the storms had done a lot of damage to the washes/canyon. There was very thick growth in the bottom of the canyon at Wagon Spring. Found an easy, short, work around up to the right. Got off track a couple of times, but really didn't add extra distance. I would use the attached track in conjunction with the other tracks to give you the general idea of the direction you should be going. Not an easy hike...4300 feet of elevation in about 5 miles....with a lot of scrambling. Beautiful scenery. Views are incredible from the peak. " — Heartattackbruce • Oct 4, 2023
"4.10.2021~Sheep peak, solo. 10 miles, 4,600’ gain in 7:18hrs. I took the ridge south of Wagon Canyon that went directly to the peak and returned the same way. I didn’t expect this trek to take as long as it did. The terrain was harsh and it was hot. I haven’t been in high elevation in a long time and I’m still very tired from my 2nd dose of the covid vaccine 3 days ago. Those are my excuses for being slow as f#ck. I was so slow, I was able to spot a 3mm heart rock on the ground (see photo) I didn’t expect my 2WD Kia Soul (with Costco tires) to make it the 14 miles off road to Cow Camp TH so I packed my E-Bike (just in case)....but as rough as the road was, my car surprised me again and made it within 1/10 of a mile! I had to go 10mph. This area is beautiful, remote and felt very lonely. There were snow patches near the top and stunted Bristlecones. It was neat to be among the pine trees again. The reg. dated back nearly 40 years but I’m sure there have been visits prior. Getting out to this hike is a hassle but well worth it. I’ve now done the 2 highest peaks in this Mtn Range. I drank all of my 2.5 liters of water. I had to sit and rest many times on the way up. I had a front row ..." — paula.raimondi • Apr 10, 2021
"Made the long drive out Mormon Well Road to Pine Nut Road. Both are currently in great shape. From the end of Pine Nut, I dropped into a large wash & followed it for a couple of miles. I eventually climbed out of the wash & up into the lovely pine forest on the slopes & ridges of the peak. There were nice big old junipers, pinyons, ponderosas & bristlecones up higher. I took the steep east ridge all the way up. I thought the route finding was intuitive & the hike was very pleasant & enjoyable. There is a short section just below the summit (near a false summit) with some brush to work through, but there were some well placed cairns to guide me through. It was quite chilly to start & absolutely freezing up top with a biting wind. There were still some small snow patches in shady spots & gulllies. The views were gorgeous. The desert below, in the meadows & in Yucca Forest, was in full bloom. This was a very pretty & fun day. I actually liked this route better than the Wagon Canyon route." — StudioHoodoo • May 25, 2019
"Tried this peak two weeks ago from Cow Camp, but didn't make the summit due to a slow hiking partner. Solo hiked up today from Pine Nut. Took the prominent wash up to the steep East ridge. Much easier route to follow." — jviceisnice • Nov 13, 2016
"Decided to go directly up ridge out of Wagon Canyon. Was very close to the summit (on next bump over) when it started to snow heavily. I was already shivering cold, so turned around reluctantly." — StudioHoodoo • Jun 6, 2015
"Great Hike organized by our fearless Leader Linda. Long Day but totally worth it, Great Company of Hikers from Passport Vegas. Good Weather, what else can one ask for a Hiking Day!! Thank you Guys and Gals!!" — Nuernberger • Apr 9, 2014
