"From the side of the road next to Chilao Visitor Center entrance sign, I picked up a use trail overlooking Devils Canyon. The trail goes most of the way up the slope with little obstruction. "Steep but easy climb up the southwest ridge. I came up from a turnout immediately south of the junction of Angeles Crest and the road to Chilao visitor center. The turnout is on the eastbound side of the hwy, and the route heads in a northeast direction. The views into Devil's Canyon while climbing are INCREDIBLE!!!! You can see Mt. Mooney, Stony Ridge Observatory, and Devil Peak to the south, just up from Devil's Canyon. There is evidence of a faint use path enroute, but about 2/3 the way up, it's choked with dead Poodle Dog bush, so I had to circumnavigate around some ceanothus (I'd rather be scratched up a bit than face the Poodle Dog wrath!!!!!!), but I did not take an extraordinary detour though, just around some shrubs here and there. It was a fun and peaceful climb, and while most of the hike is exposed to the sun, the summit area has a small grove of Coulter Pines for shade. The mileage from turnout to peak is just under 1/2 mile with 380' gain. I am now really getting into hiking the lesser known peaks, for I have been finding them on Peakbagger's website.
