"A nice outing. I found it a little annoying and more sloggy than expected getting to the col. Moderate enjoyable scrambling up Niblock and enjoyable difficult scrambling on Whyte. Glad we opted for the alternate descent, it's always nice to make it a loop! Once back on the teahouse trail, we had to throw some elbows to get back to the car in decent time." — hollywilliams • Jun 4, 2023
"Use my GPX to go the ideal way down the alternate descent, it was pretty straightforward after the first 100m or so which was slow going, but less technical than going back (although probably a bit longer). " — jakefinnan • Jun 4, 2023
"Mount Whyte attempt. I wanted to climb both Whyte and Niblock but unexpected overnight snow above 2900m made the route up Whyte essentially impossible. Since Niblock is south facing and the route is easy the snow wasn't an issue. Great views of Victoria, Lefroy and Temple. I hope to return to do Whyte and Saint Piran next year" — yuri • Aug 18, 2021
"I don't recommend the optional descent route from Mt. Whyte to Plain of Six Glaciers Trail. It took me forever. The descent involves lots of zigzagging on coarse rock to avoid cliff bands and steep slabs, and further down lots of precarious balancing on downsloping slabs. At the end, I got cliffed out literally 10m from the Trail and spent perhaps half an hour to find a safe way down. " — Taras • Aug 14, 2021
"Feli came by my place at six and then we picked up Ron in Canmore at 7. LL parking had literally just filled up lakeshore parking when we arrived at 7:50 a.m., so we parked at the Continental Divide lot and walked up from there. All three of us went up to the Niblock-Whyte col together, then Feli and I went to Whyte and Ron went up Niblock. We took a moment to figure out how to gain the ridge at the beginning, then made our way gradually up to the summit. Kane says 35 minutes... I disagree. Maybe if you're a mountain goat lol. Anyways, we got some crap weather coming in, got some rain, but made our way back to the base of Whyte, where we ate lunch and got graupel. Yay. The sun came out again and we burned up Niblock, which I had done three years ago with Stephan. We met two young guys on the way down as they were coming up, then heading downhill to the Lake Agnes teahouse where Ron was waiting for us. The rest was fine! It could have been warmer and nicer out... but I at least got a new Kane peak, bring the total to 119... wish it had been a better season so far. I only have six new ones and three repeats ..." — leigh-annewebster • Jul 30, 2019
"As part of the Little Beehive - St Piran - Niblock - Whyte - Devil's Thumb - Beehive 2000m elevation 26km 9 hrs. Looked worse than it was. A well worn trail with cairns. One or two exposed sections but relatively easy. One could see it would be harder with snow or ice. Spectacular view." — alexjoseph • Jul 21, 2018
"Great late summer day to ascend Mt Whyte. The views from the top are superb, and would be hard to beat. The alternate descent was really sketchy, as I guess we didn't get it right. Started out ok descending a big gully, somewhat moderate scrambling, followed by a good bushwhack down fairly steep slopes. After that it was a series of cliffs that we had to work around by using grassy/mossy ledges until we got to the trail." — BertB • Aug 19, 2015
"CSMC trip. 5-peak traverse: Little Beehive - St. Piran - Niblock - Whyte.
The group decided to skip Devil's Thumb and descend to the Plain of 6 Glaciers directly. Was a bad decision which added a lot in distance.
Summary:
distance - 22.43km
elevation gain - 1,912m
time (moving / total) - 8:23hrs / 11:40hrs" — alexp • Jul 18, 2015
"from Plain of Six Glaciers tea house up gully toward Popes then traverse over to S. Ridge of subsidiary Unnamed GR504950 peak (left register) on ridge between Divide and Whyte, then over to Whyte with J. Skvaril." — KrisT • Sep 18, 1993
