"Took the long way up to Monrovia Peak via Monrovia Canyon Truck Trail. This long meandering road brushes the upper slopes of Mt Bliss before climbing to Rincon-Red Box Road. When reaching the road, I could clearly see the fire break leading up Monrovia Peak. After about a mile on Rincon-Red Box Road, I left it to ascend the very steep fire break. It was slow going up the firebreak, with false summits to deal with. Mercifully, it leveled out and made a direct route to the summit. There I was relieved to find the benchmark and summit register. I originally had intentions of continuing on to Rankin and Clamshell and descending the steep firebreak. However, after the long hike, I had enough of what the firebreaks had to offer. Instead, I chose to return on the same route to avoid any non-welcomed surprises. I had parked near the intersection of Canyon Dr and Ridgeside Dr, which is about a mile from Monrovia Canyon Park. This allowed me to save a $6 parking fee in exchange for an extra 2 miles of level walking." — MikeTeeples • Apr 7, 2018
" There after clamshell and Rankin. This log accounts for the distance and time from Rankin to Monrovia. The trail was an ass kicker gaining 4500 feet of elevation over 6 1/2 miles. To get to Monrovia Peak, I highly recommend bringing plenty of water. " — kirbyhays • Mar 24, 2018
"Classic San Gabriel Front Country. Steep, rugged, and hot with killer views the whole day. Bottom third of the ridge route was steep and loose, but the firebreak was recently bulldozed making for smooth sailing up most of the peak. Plenty of opportunity to marvel at the flood control infrastructure of LA county. Down the long way - 10 easy miles along the road to Monrovia Canyon Park." — klotito • Feb 4, 2018
"Clamshell Ridge might be the worst hiking imaginable. There's barely a trail.
It's a shame because Monrovia Peak is kind of amazing. I can't imagine a more comprehensive view of the peaks of the Angeles, from Wilson to Baldy." — JustinB • Mar 10, 2016
"Final peak on the ridge traverse. Found and signed the register on this one. All downhill from the top. Saw a red fox below the White Saddle. Ran out of water with 4 miles left; I was happy to make it back to the car." — edg • Jul 26, 2015
