"I was pleasantly surprised to find that the peak was a National Veterans Memorial! Had to park down the street and walk in on a paved road. I was moved by this memorial and spent some time reading the various plaques dedicated to the war veterans. "I have admired Mt. Soledad since childhood. I have been to the veterans' cross many times growing up in the nearby neighborhood of Clairemont, as my parents have driven me up there as a child. As an adult, after living in Orange County, then New Jersey, and then back in OC, I have driven to San Diego and up to the cross several times and still get the magical feel I had when I was a kid. I finally realized that the veteran cross is not the high point of Soledad, but an eastern summit (811'). The true high point (822')of the long ridge is near Via Casa Alta, a 1/4-1/2 mile away. However, the cross makes for an awesome vantage point with the best views. I feel that it definitely deserves summit status as it is the highest point in the immediate vicinity.. Now that I am a serious hiker, the next inevitable question is: "Okay, now how can I HIKE to this summit, and the 822' summit of Soledad?" I know that the cross is in Soledad Natural Park, and that there are trails that radiate down to La Jolla neighborhood streets.
