"This was to be my last of the Big 4 but it was not meant to be. The ascent gully is steep but well clipped. The problems began on the ridge. After crossing the meadow and ascending the first of the bumps on the ridge line I was completely stopped by five foot high whitethorn. I'm pretty sure I was on route, following flags and a few odd ducks. Running out of daylight with 10 miles to ride back to the car and not wanting to lose more blood to the chaparral I decided to turn back. A disappointing end to my Big 4 attempt. Next time I'll bring pants, long sleeves, gloves, and some loppers!" — edg • Nov 12, 2021

"I've been doing a lot of miles on the MTB lately and this is why...SANTA BARBARA BIG FOUR IN A DAY! 4 Peaks, 46 miles, and 9000 ft elevation gain. Car to car in 14.5 hours starting by headlamp at 4am.
Samon was peak # 1 of 4 and was the hardest by far. The ascent gully was steep and loose. On the ridge line, I encountered dense fog, zero visibility, and cold driving wind. The bushwhack left me soaking wet - I had to keep moving to stay warm. The use trail was scant and there was one false summit after another. On the way down, the skies cleared and I thought I was out of the woods, but I accidentally took the wrong gully down, heading AWAY from the road! I tried to sidehill around a ridge but it got steep and loose so I had to climb BACK UP 500 heartbreaking feet. Not an auspicious start to this epic trip." — klotito • Apr 28, 2018
