What a day! We started at the Willow Springs Picnic Area and hiked up Rocky Gap Road for a while. We then turned up a gully, which was quite scenic - water was flowing and there were several small waterfalls to negotiate. I had a GPS track to follow up to the top of the ridge, which was nice, since the break in the cliff bands was hidden for most of the approach. The way up was loose, brushy and tick-ridden. Sadly, the top of the ridge wasn't much better. We bushwhacked our way north, where we would finally gain Peak 7877's SE Ridge. Once there, we dropped our 200 foot rope, pull cord and rap gear, so we would have a lighter pack for the final stretch. We made it up with no issues and enjoyed our first successful summit of the day. After a short break, we descended back down the ridge, picked up our stuff and made our way to Snoopy's Forehead. There are actually 2 summits for Snoopy's Forehead, but the lower one is the one with the register, likely because of the better views. Our plan from there was to set up an anchor to rap down the overhung cliff towards Snoopy's Nose, which would save us a lot of time and a lot of descent and regain to hike around the cliff band. I climbed down a crack and looked for a suitable place to set up an anchor, but there wasn't one. We descended SW until we found a sketchy break in the cliff, which we climbed down carefully. This was awkward and we set up a handline. Once down, we reascended along the cliffs, since the descent track I had was on the other side of the ridge. By this time, daylight was running short. We decided to abandon our plans for Snoopy's Nose and started following the descent track down the loose, rolling rocks. We spotted a break and tried to descend directly. We ended up getting cliffed out at the end of the gully, so we climbed up and around and found a spot where we could set up a rappel. It was nearly dark, so we had to work quick, to make sure we could see that the rope would reach. By the time everything was set and we started to rap, it was dark. We each rapped down with our headlamps, but we were still stuck on a cliff that wasn't easily descended in the dark. We set up one more rap, which got us down to the gully. We followed the extremely brushy and cactus-filled gully back down to where it intersected the La Madre Springs Trail, which we took a short way back to Rocky Gap Road. By the time we reached our vehicle, it was 9pm and we had been hiking for over 14 hours. Since I had planned this hike, I wasn't the most popular person. Lol.
