I left my home at 6:30 AM, June 15, 2017, to hike Gallo Peak, elevation 10,003, and Peak 10,057 in the Manzano Mountains. From Tijeras, New Mexico I headed south on highway 337, then at the town of Manzano I turned right onto Highway 131. In a short distance I turned onto Forest Road 253 and drove to Red Canyon Picnic Grounds. You do not need any special vehicle for this drive. There is a parking lot for hikers. It was a beautiful, cool, clear, crisp morning. The starting elevation was 7938 feet. I started hiking at 7:40 AM. I hiked through the picnic grounds to Trailhead 89. It was a well maintained trail to the ridge. It is a nicely shaded beautiful forest of white furs, aspen, ponderosa pines and many other attractive trees, bushes and wildflowers. There is not much elevation gain on the first mile of the hike, only about 300 feet. About a half mile into the hike is a pretty little stream with small pools and small waterfalls. After so many hard bushwhacking hikes it sure felt good to be on a trail. A little into the hike I ran into a hunter’s lost dog. I tried to shoo her back down the trail, but she kept following at a slight distance. Finally, I let her come along with me. When I was nearing the ridge I used the phone number on the tag and called the hunter. He said she had been lost a day and a half and that the GPS tracker battery died. She looked tired and hungry and I didn’t have much to offer so I gave her some mild red chile jerky which she liked. I planned to met the hunter in the early afternoon. The dog’s name was Layla and she was a tree walker coonhound. The dog looked worn out and I hated to take her to both peaks, but I did not have much choice. I arrived at the ridge and the trail ended. Supposedly there is a crest trail that runs the length of the mountain range, but it did not exist. I had to bushwhack and navigate over some jagged rocky edges to reach the top. I arrived at the top after hiking 2 hours and 15 minutes. The total assent was 2065 feet and I had hiked 3.6 miles. There were very nice views in all directions from the top. I continued north back to the saddle. The dog looked so tired, skinny and hungry I tied her up to do the next peak then planned to come back and take her down. As I crossed a meadow to ascend the peak she made such pitiful barking sounds at me I came back and took her. It was a little easier to navigate than the last peak, but still took some bushwhacking. I saw a young buck deer along the way. I arrived at the peak after hiking 3 hours and 30 minutes and had now hiked 4.9 miles which included a little doubling back to get the dog. There were nice views through the trees at the top, and nice views in spots the entire ridge hike. I hiked back to the saddle then down the beautiful forested Red Canyon Trail. I arrived back at the trailhead and gave Layla to her owner. He said his dogs had been trying to track mountain lion. I arrived back at the car after hiking 8.7 miles in 5 hours and 42 minutes. The total up-down ascent was 2667 feet. There were not any issues with downed trees from forest fires, as had been the case on my last 2 Manzano mountain hikes.
