"Well, that was not the day I was hoping for. Rained all weekend and I was hoping it would break today. It didn’t. My people still persevered and climbed to the top of Mt Mansfield in the rain, wind and cold. We scrambled the exposed ridge in the rain and summitted to the 4,395’ rooftop of Vermont.
When viewed from the east or west, this mountain has the appearance of a (quite elongated) human profile, with distinct forehead, nose, lips, chin, and Adam's apple. Unlike most human faces, the chin is the highest point (Mt. Mansfield).
Mount Mansfield is one of three spots in Vermont where true alpine tundra survives from the Ice Ages. A few acres exist on Camel's Hump and Mount Abraham nearby and to the south, but Mount Mansfield's summit still holds about 200 acres - the trail is roped off to keep you from stepping on these fragile plants.
We gained the ridge and climbed the Adam’s Apple, Chin (summit), Lower Lip, Upper Lip and the Nose - down climbing before the Forehead cause the conditions were so windy and rainy.
Then fixed my broken people with Ben & Jerry’s and maple syrup. 19/50 states in the books." — wiweasel • Jun 24, 2024

"Returned to our favourite peak in VT to bag Adam's Apple which we orphaned last time out. Hiked along the ridge, over Mansfield and to the Apple. Awesome day in the mountains in what has become our favourite destination. " — HikingViking • Aug 12, 2023

"On one of the most hot and humid days in the northeast, this hike along the Long Trail on the ridge, fit the bill. A mid 70s and a 25mph breeze was just what the doctor ordered! This was the moderate section from The Forehead on my way up to the Chin, with some limited scrambling here and there. Went slightly off the trail to access this noteworthy summit." — SteveM_StickMan • Aug 7, 2022

"With friends of mine, climbed Mt. Mansfield via the Long Trail for the finish of my NE111/115. Celebrated with champagne at the top. Skies were cloudy and it was chilly and windy on the summit. Incredible above treeline adventure from The Chin to The Nose. Descended via the ski slopes" — JMindlin12463 • Sep 11, 2021

"After returning from The Nose, I decided to make an attempt at the main summit and possibly beyond since I had enough time before sunset. Along with the Upper Lip on the LT, this minor peak, just off the trail, was on the way. After checking out the "Rock of Terror", in making my way back to the LT, I slipped and tore my knee. Had to abort The Chin attempt. Fortunately, after many rest stops, I made it back to my car at the pkg. lot." — SteveM_StickMan • Jun 7, 2021
"Short and steep! Going up Long trail was fun, especially final scramble. But peak was littered with car folk. Oh well, its a spectacular spot for everybody. Just a little too hazy to see Champlain. First VT 4k, great hike!" — Alohabuffy • Sep 19, 2015
