Before reaching the entrance station at Joshua Tree NP's East Entrance in Twentynine-Palms, I parked just off Utah Trail at a turnout on Wellock Rd. From there, I crossed Utah Trail and headed cross country toward the mountains to the west. The route crosses through a few washes before reaching the base of the mountains. I aimed for the obvious gully, which is just south of the protruding dome rock that is the summit of Joshua Mountain. Once entering the gully I found a use trail on its south side. I followed this use trial into the gully and up the slope, It was marked often with rock ducks which helped to lead me in the right direction. Along the way, the climb involves scrambling over small boulders. This was a fun challenge which eventually lead to a saddle. From the saddle, I just walked due west beyond the summit dome block. On the other side of the block, I climbed its north-west slope up the steep slick rock to the summit. Some Class 2 & 3 scrambling was involved. The summit had a great view and I was pleased to have climbed it on a 50 degree day. These cool desert days are definitely nicer than the usual 100 degree days!
