"6/19/23: Paul and I left Kevin G at the top of the spur ridge (Red Mtn) on the Divide and after some well-deserved replenishment we headed towards Hassell on the snow-free West side of the ridge along the CDT to a point where a significant snow drift covering the trail made the decision to start our scramble fairly obvious. Mostly Class 2+ and easy Class 3 led the way up and over the first summit block and then a short scramble over rock and snow to the summit. Best front porch views of Pettingell (next week!) and then the recon for decent: Circuitous route of summit snowfield to open country bench above large, some what rotten and definitely steep rock fall that was needed to down climb to a point where we could do a double glissade down to the upper basin. A short willow thicket traverse led to another exciting glissade and then a sustained slog just above tree line with many water course crossings until we met up with an old logging trail that led to a hill-side meadow down to the Hassell Lake Trail and TH. We met back up with our bikes at the gate and rode back to the Taco. Another beautiful and amazing day on and off the Divide that had a little bit of everything! "I came up from the Herman Gulch trail and turned north along the CDT. The trail conveniently goes over the summit of Hassell and I arrived in just over 3 hours. From Hassell, I went south along the ridge towards Pettingell, but turned left and headed for Machebeuf." — WaxDr • Jun 26, 2016
"Hiked from Butler Gultch and hiked "Rad Peak" along with it. Hiked along the continental divide heading down the peak. Fun class 2+ and minor amounts of class 3 scrambling. " — MtnGeek • Jul 15, 2007
