"Solo for this one. Steep hike but great views. Met a couple that were new ADK 46er s! They finished on Seymour. Started to rain as they got back to their car! Talked about a few good memories in the High peaks and our journeys! " — Aquafina314 • Jun 26, 2022

"One of my favorite local hikes. On this trip, I decided to hike counter clockwise via the Putnam Farm trail until it reached the blue trail which climbs to Crane Pond. From the pond, I continued on to the summit. I returned to the trailhead via the red trail completing the loop. The loop was 4.1 miles & took 2hrs. 30 min. with several stops on the way." — billsussdorff • Jun 24, 2022

"Tom, Black and I left the trailhead at 11:30 am at 14 degrees under calm blue skies. We hiked the loop trail counter clockwise so Black didn't need to deal with coming down the ladders. Trail conditions were extreme ice! Black was able to bushwack around some of the dangerous areas. He did good on the ladders climbing up them with me following closely behind. Summited at 12:30 to amazing views but strong cold wind chills. The return trip from the summit was no better with the trail being over flowed with ice. In places 30 to 40 feet wide. I wore trail crampons for my first time and was damn glad I did. Tom struggled with micros and had to resort to using the ice axe occasionally. Returned to car at 2:30. 3.7 miles in roughly 3 hours. Great hike , great views but very challenging!" — garyogden • Jan 16, 2022

"Beautiful mtn! Great views. Awesome pond! Efts everywhere. Kicker coming down from the pond! Easy walk out once down though. All trails said no dogs so I didn't bring my Setter! Several others I know brought there dogs in the past with no problems. Was bummed I didn't have my hiking partner!" — Retiredtop2004 • Jun 19, 2021

"Great challenging climb! Very bouldery and vertical in many places, especially on the descent from the pond. Not kid or dog friendly - downright frightening in some areas for kids. But for able-bodied adventurous adults, it's 4-5 hours of great exercise and neat views and time well-spent!" — abammert • Aug 17, 2019

"Well, what a thigh burner this was !! Up, up and more up ! Love this kind of peak. One of my favourites so far. Challenging trail with interesting sections (The 30ft ladder). The views at the top were spectacular, as we caught the sunset. Map and Trail markers say the trail is 1.4mi, GPS had it at .9. Didn't matter though, as with the steepness, combined with having just done Peaked, it was tough either way and felt like a 5 miler !" — HikingViking • Aug 10, 2019

"Crane Mountain
March 26th, 2019
11:09a We stopped for a brief moment to catch our breath and have some lunch. We started our adventure at 10:13a this morning. For lunch I am having a ham and cheese sandwich with a peach cup. Yum! So far Crane Mountain has been beautiful. There are birds chirping and I even saw a blue-jay, flying around in the trees. God this is beautiful. I could literally sit here all day and not even be upset about it. Alright, I am gonna finish my sandwich and we are gonna continue on.
11:36a Well, we are at our next stop. We hit snow-hikers! Someone who went ahead of us took the time to build two adorable snowmen up on one of the faces of the mountain.
11:40a We have reached a junction. If we go left we go to Crane Mountain Pond and right is to the summit. We go right for now!... after a brief rest.
11:45a Well… Tom, one of our group couldn’t pass a certain point because of how steep and slippery the ice was. He decided to turn around and wait for us at the junction while Denisse and I went ahead to the summit. He said he had already climbed the mountain seven times in the past few summers so missing it wasn’t a big deal for him.

"Hiked Crane today with Tom. Nice short loop hike up to the summit of Crane and then down to the pond before completing the loop and returning to the car. Weather was nice, not too hot, and comforting breeze. Nice day to be out in the woods. " — Kim-Stilson • Jun 10, 2018
"Went on a little hike today with Kim. There were several cars already in the parking lot when we arrived around 10:30am. I forgot to bring my GPS watch, so I don't really know distance and time. We did a counter clockwise loop, hitting the summit of Crane first and then continuing on to the pond before heading back to the car. We took our time and got back to the car around 1pm. Nice day overall. " — LGH-Tom • Jun 10, 2018

" thought this hike was fun and challenging. I was hesitant because i am afraid of heights but the ladder was not scary. The hardest part was the descent. We did the loop and i think the next time we will return via the ladder trail. The blue trail down was hard due to a lot of pine needles making the trail slick. The view was awesome!" — kathyrowney • Jul 4, 2016
