"The Tokyo 10". The quintessential peak challenge in day trip range from the Greater Tokyo Area. Of course it includes Mount Fuji (the most climbed mountain in the world?) and a collection of classic peaks just west of Tokyo lying mostly in the Tanzawa Mountains (also includes Mount Tsukuba to the northeast). One highlight: work up an appetite for an incredible bowl of nabeyaki udon at the summit hut of Mount Nabewariyama. This is a great challenge to get you out of the city... and when you finish these 10 you'll already have a head start on the Japan 100 Famous Mountains Challenge.

"Started our trek from 5th Station of Yoshida Trail at 1345H and ended up until Goraikoukan Hut (8th Station) at around 2300H. Then after a few hours of rest, we started summit assault at 0200H and arrived in the summit after 1.5 hrs." — baskog • Aug 18, 2024

"Started hike at the 5th Station, Yoshida Ascending Route (color coded yellow signs). Hiked to a hut at the 8th station, Gansom-muro, for an overnight stay. Woke up early the next morning, hiked up trail to the crater rim then followed the rim trail to the hightest point, Kengamine Peak, which is occupied by a radar station. Took the rim trail back to the Yoshida descending route returning to the 5th station. Note that the Yoshida trail has both an ascending AND descending routes. Both are well signed. The ascending route crosses numerous rock outcrops while the descending route is almost entirely on a road. Rain was an issue given the rainy season.
NOTE: New rules/restrictions for hiking Fujisan beginning with the 2024 hiking season, including trail closures and fees. All toilets above the 5th station require 200 to 300 yen per use so take plenty of 100 yen coins. There are no trash cans on the mountain so take plastic bags to carry out your trash. Water, snacks and drinks are available at many of the huts along the way, at marked up prices." — fredbrown585 • Jul 16, 2024

"Took nearly 9 hours to climb including about 5 hours to summit. The trail was all carved out of the volcanic rockfall. Some parts were a rock climb over rock formations. The trail was very well supported with mountain huts every few hundred meters that provided provisions and sleeping quarters. I've never seen anything like it. All of us experienced some form of mountain sickness toward the top." — Domtron • Jul 2, 2024

"Climbed Mt. Fuji (Fujisan) with Dennis Broadwell of Mountain Gurus in his August 22 2018 summit group. We climbed up using the Fujinomiya-Gotemba routs and stayed in a hut up on the mountain. We forewent the "sunrise summit" as it was raining at 3 AM and instead saw sunrise from the hut and had a bluebird summit day. We descended via the Prince route. Cole joined me and he also circumnavigated the crater with Dennis since they both had more energy than the rest of us. " — 40in40 • Aug 22, 2018

"Climbing with a friend, we both bought a staff with an attached bell that was meant to scare off bears that lived in the mountain. Luckily (and in some way unluckily) we didn't see any.
Mid-way on the mountain, there was a small town where on our way back we couldn't find the route we came from and got a little lost. Luckily, there were someone who could help us get on the right track going down. " — RyuuTenshi • Jul 17, 2018
