"After Blueberry Mtn, Molly and I hiked up Black from the Chippewa side. Steep ascent. But we made it to the summit and were rewarded with hazy views. After this, we headed over to Haverhill to pick up a Scoop and Loop at Hatchland. " — newenglandwarrior • Sep 3, 2023
"Very warm day for a hike, but there was usually a small breeze to help out. This trail is short but fun. Love all of the outcroppings and ledges it offers. Good views of western Moose and the valley." — Alohabuffy • Jul 29, 2020
"Nora, Kali and I headed up Chippewa Trail to the summit of Black Mountain in the Benton area from a rather full parking area. We met a lot of other hikers out on this nice day.
A good part of the trail was covered in pine needles and fairly slippery on the steep sections because of them. They did make the trail very pretty though.
The views from the ledges at the top and just below the summit were amazing. Fall colors, layers of mountains in the distance and of course, Mt Moosilauke right across from us in all its autumn glory.
We sat on the summit for about 45 minutes and had lunch, then headed down with way too many pictures taken.
Great hike and, due to the GPS telling us probably the longest possible way to get to and from the trailhead to home, a very long day. " — Hufflepuff • Oct 13, 2019
"After Blueberry Mtn, Denise and I set up a car spot along Black Mtn. We went up the Chippewa Tr. Great views from the summit. We came down Black Mtn Tr. Denise found a turtle pretty close to the summit in the trail. And there was no source of water nearby. Bizarre." — newenglandwarrior • Jun 29, 2018
"Decided to work on 52wav early in the morning....hit blueberry and then headed to black. What a great mountain....beautiful views, a little steep for some fast running and great trail." — shay-shay • Jun 20, 2017
"It was great to be back in the White Mountains and to have a snow and ice-free trail before mid-May or even June! Outside for a few short stretches of wet, muddy patches with a little water trickling down, the Chippewa Trail was mostly dry and covered in dead leaves and pine needles. The trek up to the old cellar hole was a moderate climb that soon kicked into high gear after that. The elevation gain up to the summit was relentless, but after about 1.1 miles when the more open, rockier sections popped up, the climb and the views were more enjoyable.
The view of the Moosilauke from the summit was fantastic. I could also see the the Franconia Ridge peaking its head over the foreground mountains, specifically the still snow-capped peak of Lafayette. To the south and west the views stretched all the way to the Killington ski resort in Vermont on this amazingly clear day.
A word of caution to take your time on the way back down the trail. Wet rocks and pine needle-covered sections made for a slow go. Even though the pine needles were dry, with such a steep decline I took a couple slips on the way down when there were a few too many between my feet and the actually base of the trai..." — HikeLikeMike • Apr 23, 2017
"Beautiful winter trip. Only and inch or two of snow on the ground but it was very slick.. microspikes the whole way. Windy on summit. blew me over!!!! Hazy views to the horizon." — goshen-bagger • Feb 5, 2017
"52 With a View Trifecta: Stinson, Blueberry, and Black (Benton)
On most weekend days, one hike would suffice my desire to get outside. But this wasn’t your ordinary Saturday. What was supposed to be a one-off hike of Smarts Mountain with a group of college kids at the College Get Outside Weekend turned into a marathon of peaks, back to back to back.
Lauren and I stayed at AMC’s Cardigan Lodge with a large group of college kids, some of whom were potentially going to hike with us. However, it didn’t seem as if people were diggin’ our idea, so we ended up all alone. No matter, we figured, we would go off and do our own thing.
Looking at the map, it appeared as if we were closest to Stinson Mountain, and since I plan to complete the 52 With a View list someday, that appeared to be the best option. But when we flew up the uneventful mountain in 45 minutes, we realized that we would need to occupy the remainder of our day elsewhere.
Atop the not-so-impressive summit of Stinson, we reexamined our options. If we wanted to finish off the day sweaty and tired, it made the most sense to do Blueberry Mountain. And hey, what the heck, Benton sounded like a good idea as well.

"Part of a Blueberry and Black Mtn hike. Black Mtn was the second hike of the day. Went up via Chippewa Trail, and detoured to check out the kilns, which was wicked cool. The trail had a decent grade. There were great views of the western side of Mooseilauke at the summit. There was also great views to the south and west near the summit." — newenglandwarrior • May 20, 2015
