15th October 2017. An ascent of Addlebrough 481m/94m in the Yorkshire Dales, Pennines. 1.9km, with 130m of ascent. 0hrs 45mins.

Time was now limited after our walk on Oxnop Common, so AT and I abandoned our plan to ascend another 500m summit, looking for a shorter walk to finish the day. Addlebrough beckoned to us across Wensleydale with its distinctive outline, a sort of miniature Ingleborough.

We drove up a quiet lane on the western side of the fell to the lonely farmstead at Carpley Green, where the tarmac road finished, continuing for many a mile as an old stony drover's road over the moors to Bishopdale.

I parked the car by a gate at the start of a bridleway which took us to the open access land at the foot of the fell. A short pull up the broad south ridge brought us above the limestone crags onto the summit plateau. We followed a high wall around in a loop to the summit area, which had to be reached by scaling this wall and squeezing beneath the wire on top of it. Given the shapeliness of the fell from below, the unmarked summit was a bit of a disappointment, being flat, featureless and lacking a broad panorama - though the weather did not help.

After some photos, we returned by our outward route, detouring a little to view the limestone crags at the edge of the plateau. With cloud thickening on a threat of rain, we reached the car without incident.
