"I thought this was the summit of Cheat Mountain--which the name of the old Civil War fort at the top implies: Cheat Summit Fort. Turns out it's a peak on Cheat Mountain but not the highest one. Still it's a nice uphill jaunt from Shavers Fork, deep in the Monongahela National Forest. During the Civil War, the fort here remained a Union stronghold within Confederate territory (before West Virginia was formed), and General Lee himself could not retake it. History aside, it's a pleasant hike with some nice views--which are mostly hidden by trees." — briansnyder • Feb 3, 2021
