We are the Mountain Goats (formerly 'lil), Nathan (14) and Terrence (12) and on Friday we went into Swakane Canyon and climbed Swakane Peak. Our original plan was to climb Mt. St. Helens, but with the weather forecast we decided to try east of the mountains, since there was no way anyone would be getting up St. Helens. We decided to try Swakane Peak based on recent trips reports saying that it was snow free and a good spring hike - we are a bit tired of the snow!
We spent the night in Wenatchee (had some good sushi at Iwo sushi) and had a short drive to the trailhead, which was easy to find. The road was pretty bad, with huge potholes, but luckily it was only a couple of miles. We parked right at the gated road, which is clearly a spot for some camping and shooting - lots of shells all over. The trail is essentially the forest road almost all the way up to the summit, so it's easy to follow. We saw two large families of deer moving around the hills above us.
