"Lots of water in Horsethief Creek on the way in. The way up Sheep was somewhat confusing, I ended up climbing to a saddle and then following the ridge up. Great views of Coachella Valley, San Jacinto and San Gorgoino.
The gully up to Martinez is steep. Lower part is brushy, upper part is solid. Fun class 3 summit block with amazing views of the rest of the Santa Rosa range and the Salton Sea.
Long walk back to the car, especially the climb back out of the creek.

"Bagged this one Saturday before heading back to camp at Horse Thief Creek and do Martinez the next day. Both peaks are typically done in a day hike, but you'd want optimal weather and prepare to suffer some.
It's a pretty typical grindy desert peak where weather makes all the difference. Off trail routefinding can be tedious at points through the unfriendly desert fauna.
See the sheep spine near the register." — JustinB • Apr 21, 2018
"Off-Trail experience with Sierra Club WTC through desert shrubbery, extra-friendly Cholla, not-so-friendly yucca, and lots of talus. There's a bleached antelope skeleton at the top, too!" — ctrain2018 • Apr 21, 2018
"2nd peak of 2-peak Sierra Club hike to Martinez Mountain - Sheep Mountain. 4 miles w/1,900' loss and 800' gain 1-way from Martinez Mountain cross country route. 7.5 miles w/1,500' gain and 2,000' loss from Sheep Mtn summit back to "Sawmill Trailhead" parking, cross country and on trail. Stream crossing, bushwack, snow. Long, fun day (20 miles w/5,500' gain) in the San Jacinto Mountains! " — BradStemm • Mar 7, 2015
"Spectacular views from the top, but it's a b***h to climb! Lots of hard, scrabbly rock and loose dirt in full sun...tough on my bad knees. But it was worth it, however. This was the second peak of the day, after Martinez Mountain, which was a longer but much more pleasant hike." — HikerMark • Apr 6, 2014
