"On one of those rare days that I get off from work at 1pm and have the next day off, I knew it was time to do an afternoon hike. I decided it was time to visit the Santa Ana Mountains. I did a short hike to Elsinore Peak off S. Main Divide, south of the community of Rancho Capistrano. Then, I wanted to go to the Blue Jay Campground area and visit Peak 3520, which is the summit with a small tower and tank just above the campground and San Juan Trailhead. The easiest way to hike that peak would be just to park at the San Juan TH and hike the short distance (140' gain) to the top, but I wanted to "make it count" and parked on a turnout on Long Canyon Road a little ways down from the campground and TH. about 20' from the pullout, I found a trail that is opposite on Long Canyon Road from the service road to some conservation camp or some sort, and I followed it up the ridge gaining elevation fairly quickly as it went up and over a small bump to a minor saddle, and then followed it sharply up, meeting up with a service road.
