"Beautiful day for a hike. Had to cross an area of unexpected standing water near the trailhead, but thankfully someone had placed a couple of logs in the water. "This little mountain next to the Rio Grande offers all around views of the surrounding area. And it has a trail, Otowi Peak Trail, which starts from a parking lot next to the river. There are no signs noting the trail, nothing, so an explanation is necessary. While the start point is on federal land, the trail crosses private and Indian reservation properties. There are no posted access restrictions and the trail going up the mountain is well worn. Apparently there's no agreement for public access so... Anyway, next to the parking area is a light blue metal rail fence designed to limit access to vehicles. There's also a yellow gate, next to which is an opening for hikers. Go through the gate, follow the road for about 2/10 mile to an arroyo; go up the arroyo (east) for over a half mile to a trail leaving the north side of the arroyo, marked with a cairn or two. (N35.8381, W106.1493). The trail climbs up a gully to the top of La Mesita Mesa. Once on top of the mesa the trail flattens out with the HP clearly visible to the north. The trail is easy to follow.
