"This hill is much loved by locals, long before being the inspiration for the fictional film "The Englishman who went up a hill and came down a mountain" starring Hugh Grant; and with its stunning panoramic views from the grassy top, and the beautiful forest in the lower reaches, it is easy to see why.
From Taff's Well train station, across the footbridge, through the estate parallel to the river, then an alleyway takes you to a path. You can go left here (and then right up School lane) or, as I did, right for some hundred yards then a zig-zag path up to the lane. Then left at the pub, following the road, then taking the second marked PF which zigzags once more until there is a turn off for a very steep climb northwards up the nose of the hill to a rocky outcrop (probably unadvisable in wet weather - the alternative is to continue straight) then a further steep climb up a grassy slope, followed by various paths leading to the 2000BC tumuli and the trig point. From here there are views to the Brecon Beacons, Merthyr, the Severn Bridge, Cardiff bay, and on a clear day, the north Devon peaks.
