"Jenna and I made the long day trip to the DTC. We started the hike at 10:30am. We walked down to the lake, put the traction on and crossed the lake. The deep freeze made the ice so thick! I took a 13cm ice screw just to check and you could see the ice shelves hitting each other probably 3 or 4 times that depth. It is still creepy crossing it. It felt psychologically better to not look down lol and to walk on the snow drifts even though it was perfect safe at this time.

No fun for her on the way up and I definitely had the advantage with deeper traction and the heel lift plus the float. On the way down there was less advantage and through some dense bushwhacking where there was minimal snow it was less hazardous for her. "This is a fantastic winter snowshoeing/hiking destination when Abraham Lake is solid frozen, usually from mid January until early March.
Most of the hike is in the trees but the summit offers breathtaking views in all directions. It is probably the most scenic Alberta fire lookout.
We had little snow on the slopes so snowshoes were not necessary. We did it on a very warm day with no wind, highly unusual for this area. I ended up walking in a t-shirt. Perfect day to do this hike! " — Taras • Mar 17, 2019
