Baiyue - The 100 Peaks of Taiwan (6/100)
The name Beidawushan commemorates the aboriginal Taiwanese warriors who fought alongside the Japanese during WW2. They fought facing the enemy to the north, as American forces slowly took control over the islands of the Japanese archipelago. Mt Kavulungan is the aboriginal name of the peak, and was regarded as sacred ground. The Chinese characters that sound out Ritangzhenshan resemble the aboriginal name of the bonus peak.
Brian and Yifang joined me for the outing, which was very helpful since hiking in Taiwan is very complicated for foreigners. We reserved a private shuttle that picked us up at Zuoying Station and took us to the trailhead. We took a wrong turn that took us right below Ritangzhenshan so I ran up the bonus peak on the way in. I was very surprised to see few people on the trail, but now I know why. Afternoon showers are common here, and everyone else was just ahead of us. "Started in Huanshan after staying at mountain lodge (1550m). Climbed over Zhijiyang Shan (Baiyue) then continued to cabin ruins at about 3330m. Set camp here dehydrated. Water source is not very good at 200m away. Next morning hiked up Xue Shan South Peak by following ribbons. Once back at camp, we continue up the southeastern face of Xue Shan (Baiyue). We were the only group on the summit. Descended the standard route, climbing Xue Shan East Peak (Baiyue) along the way. At Wuling Farm we had a driver take us back to Huanshan. "The trail from Tataka is in excellent condition, 10.9 km to the summit, but most climbers stay at Paiyun Lodge, 3400m, about 4 hrs. from Tataka. From the lodge to the summit one needs between 90min. and 2 hrs. (usually in the dark). The upper part is steep, but there are chains all the way to the top." — martinlutterjohann • Nov 7, 2017
