"I had a half day to drive up to Garibaldi and to get up into the alpine. I decided to walk up the ski slopes of Blackcombe Mountain. It was a tough 3 to 4 hour slog to the 6300 foot level. This is the high point of the ski runs. The hike was hot and dry. It was a miserable slog. I hoped to get up onto the top of the Spearhead Range and spend the night at this level. The next the plan was to climb Blackcommb and the Spearhead. Decker was a possibility but I felt I was limited with time.
I hiked past the ski runs onto a bench which provided some beautiful meadows. I angled my way west to the steep slopes below Blackcomb. I selected a route that would lead me into the col between a false summit and Blackcomb. The route was a steep and slow scramble that required strong route finding. By 2130 I decided to stop as the light was fading. I was on a comfortable ledge that gave me an opportunity to lay down 3/4 of the way up the Slope. I spent the night on the ledge. My sleep was not good but I felt I had done the right thing by waiting for dawn before moving further.
The next morning I scrambled up to the col and set up my camp to have a few more hours of sleep.
