"We went on a family outing to Red River, New Mexico over Labor Day weekend 2011 with my wife and 4 daughters, my son Garret, his wife and her father, and my new 7 month old granddaughter. We rented a nice home for the weekend to all be together. My plan was to get up very early a couple of mornings and hike some peaks and be back about the time that everyone was stirring. I tried to get some takers to get up with me and leave the house before 6 AM but no one would go. I got up at the first crack of light on Saturday morning and went about a quarter of a mile from our weekend rental home, parked in the Red River Skiing area, and began hiking at 6 AM. The starting elevation was 8700 feet. It was a crisp 43 degrees with dark clear skies when I began hiking. I was looking for Pioneer trail. The map showed this trail going right up the ski area. I could not find a sign so I “burned it” up a black diamond ski run until I came to the service road. After studying the map, it appeared the trail was the service road. I continued following the road to the top of the ski area on the east side just as the sun was coming over the ridge.
