As far as I can determine, Twin Butte is the 5th highest named summit in Kansas. Based on my study of the topo map, I believe this butte (the west one) is higher. It is difficult to tell which butte is higher from the map due to the closeness of the contour lines and impossible to tell from direct observation on either summit. In any case, my son, Marshall, and I had an enjoyable climb from an access road located only .25 miles north of the buttes. The beginning of this road (northeast of the buttes) had an old posted sign torn in half. We were able to park behind a mound that blocked the view of our car from the main road while we made our climb. There was one barbed wire fence that had to be crossed at the beginning of the climb. We ascended the east butte first then made an easy traverse to the (probably) higher west butte before returning to the car. There is a great view in all directions from both buttes. This is NOT your typical western Kansas high point!
