This highpoint is on restricted land under operation by EMRTC (Energetic Material Research and Test Center). These guys blow stuff up. The EMRTC in conjunction with NM Tech University allows access to the mountain annually during during the 49er M Mountain Run. Its really a great way to visit the mountain as there is no cost and you get a free meal and a ride down. You don't have to run, most don't.

The 49er M Mountain Run is an annual event hosted by NM Tech. While some participants do carry a 50lb bag of limestone (for painting the M) it's not a requirement for participation. This event is held during the month of October and registration is required on race day. You also must sign a waiver and be at least 18 years of age. Registration is done in the parking lot across from the Fine Arts Building on Canyon Road. Participants are then bussed to an EMRTC site at the foot of the mountain. Food and water are provided near the "M" upon finishing.

The race is from an EMRTC site (elevation 4970') to the base of "M" mountain, which is about 7000' in elevation. Distance is only 1.6 miles cross-country with an elevation gain of a little over 2000'. Food and drink are provided free of charge under a tent located on a flat area below the "M". Participants are then bussed down the mountain, no walking back due to liability issues. There is very little advertising of the race. I suggest checking the NM Tech school calendar in September for the exact date. Also pre-register online before the race, it will save you time. In 2019 the registration time started at 0700. Race didn't begin until 0845.

The highpoint, Socorro Peak Northwest, is about 8/10 mile west of "M" Mountain. Socorro Peak is the center peak and M Mountain is the eastern peak. I encountered no issues hiking over and back from the HP. Only saw two others doing the hike to the actual HP.
