My friend Brett and I have had our eyes on this one for awhile, not only for it being a major summit in the area, but for the area hosting the southernmost stands of Southern Foxtail Pine (Pinus balfouriana ssp. austrina). We were on vacation in Tulare County, staying near the foot of the Sierras in Porterville and hitting the mountain sights, and finally made it to Big Meadow North to give it a shot! We took the long mix of pavement and dirt 22S12 from Sherman Pass Rd and 23S07 to a parking/camping lot. We started on the Cannell Trail for 1/2 mi. to Sirretta Trail. We followed the Sirretta Trail to near Sirretta Pass finding 2 sets of ducks to the left indicating a ducked cross-country ascent to the ridge and peak. The route led to the north side of the summit block, a tough class 3/4 climb from that direction, so we skirted around to the south side for an easy class 2 way up to the summit and register. The views are insane all around!! The Foxtail Pines start about 2/3 the way up, and become dense on the summit ridge! The rest of the forest starts out as Jeffrey Pine/Lodgepole Pine, and Red/White Fir, later mixing with some Western White Pine and then of course, Foxtail! The canyon hike to the pass is also spectacular and rugged! Since I do not have GPS tech, I am not sure of the mileage (6-7 mi+ r/t?), but the elevation gain was close to 2,200'. The grade was steady in the middle part, but not overly steep, but will give you a workout. It was worth every step!
