The sixth and final peak of our grand hike from Mink Hollow road to Gillespie road visiting the four eastern peaks of the DP plus KHP and Round Top. After a rest break at Hurricane Ledge on KHP we tried a new, for us, route over to Round Top which ended up being a slower than expected whack to the base of the peak. In an attempt to save time we deviated from our previous track and headed straight up to the summit cairn. Thick undergrowth and a steep slippery ascent with ledges provided new fun for those already in tired mode, at least we reached the cairn while it was still light out. Tom and I attempted to follow our previous track down the ridge toward Gillespie road in fading light eventually deciding to head down to the snowmobile loop trail and take it to our jump off point for the final whack to the PA. With everyone wearing headlamps in the darkness we decided to try following the snowmobile trail all the way down to the road, a longer but safer route for the tired hikers in our group. Out at 10 pm enjoying the clear sky with a brilliant crescent moon and a planet( Venus?) quite visible to complete our full day.
