Off day on HF holiday based at Pontresina. Alone. From Pontresina I walked up a path west and then south. At end of the path I ascended gradually on the St Moritz side and then over to Val Roseg side in a small valley. It became a steep scramble – grassy – to Piz da Staz. I went along a narrow ridge and then flat boulders to Piz Mexdi. I went along boulders to Piz Rosatsch. The last bit was a rock scramble with good holds though some long drops. I went along rock ridges, gradually getting more broken, to Piz San Gian. I reached Piz Surlej (3185m and 3188m). I attempted to climb up the ridge to Munt Arlas but it was very rotten, steep with overhangs that could not be got round. I retreated and descended to Val Roseg side to the glacier in Val Roseg. Unpleasant – large boulders and steep grass. I took the path to Pontresina.
