As far as I can determine, Pilot Knob is the 3rd highest "named" summit point in Iowa, even though a sign at the trailhead claims it to be the 2nd highest. Ocheyedan Mound is actually the 2nd highest "named" point, at 1613 feet, and Hawkeye Point gets the honors of the highest point in the state at 1670 feet. I visited Pilot Knob with my son, Marshall, during our quest to climb the 10 highest "named" summit points in Iowa. The summit tower and view here was one of our favorite spots, even though we had to "climb" it in the rain.
