The second Saturday Afternoon post-work hike in a row featured a relatively short hike up to this peak between Windy Gap and Hawkins Ridge. I took a use trail across Angeles Crest Hwy from a turnout at about 7,240' elevation, between Islip Saddle and Dawson Saddle. The use trail led directly southwest up a 350' gully to Windy Gap, which on this very warm afternoon did not live up to its refreshing name beyond a gentle breeze! The use trail is very easy to follow, and the going is steep but very quick. I then joined the PCT at Windy Gap and headed east for almost a mile. I knew I was getting close to 8426 when I passed a few sharp switchbacks and a short, relatively straight passage brought me to the western foot of the peak. The PCT then swings around the north slope of the peak to the eastern foot of the peak. I could have simply walked up the ridge before the trail swung around the north face, but I followed the PCT around and to the eastern base which proved a very little bit longer hike, but a very easy walk up the east ridge, and before 3 minutes of cross-country walking, I was already on the peak; it is THAT close to the trail. I have passed this peak a few times before I even knew it was there! I have passed it to Mt. Hawkins, Hawkins Ridge Trail, and after hiking up and over Throop and Hawkins from Dawson Saddle doing a shuttle hike to Islip Saddle. The peak is nice, with a grandstand view over the southern San Gabriel Mountains, especially over Crystal lake Basin! On the return, I simply retraced my steps! Another awesome, little known peak visited, and another awesome day in the San Gabriel Mountains! Round trip is just under 3 miles, with a 1,200' gain. Check my YouTube links at the bottom of the page! My YouTube channel documents my peak hikes in multi-part miniseries, and features non-peak related material like native plant spotlights and wildlife finds whenever my camera can get whipped out quickly enough!
