I parked in a shady spot across Angeles Crest Highway at the Buckhorn Campground exit. I crossed the highway and wasn't sure I was at the right spot to begin the hike. I found a dilapidated gate and guessed that it was the right spot. As I walked further in, the use trail eventually became an old service road. The road headed west toward the Waterman Mountain area. Along the way is Peak 7190. While enjoying the really nice scenery, I overshot the turnoff point for the peak. Instead, I turned it into a two peak hike, by including Peak 7243. I did this unintentionally, since at a certain point I figured it was time finally leave the old road and go cross-country. In doing so, I climbed to the summit of Peak 7243. I didn't find a fire ring, which I had seen in photos, so at that point I figured this was a different summit. I did find a wooden post lying on the summit rocks, but I didn't notice anything written on it. I then started looking to the east, in the direction I came, and I saw a summit that I did not visit. As it turned out, this was Peak 7190. I returned to the dirt pathway and found a use trail leading up the slope at the base of Peak 7190. This quickly turned into a cross-country ascent, as expected. On top, I found the fire ring, and knew this was the right place. Two summits for the expectation of one suits me just fine. (Stats include Peak 7243).
