Peak 5483 is the highpoint of the Sierra Rica mountains. The peak is less than a half-mile from the US-Mexican border in a remote part of the state. Access to the area is off NM-81 south of Hachita. Turn onto Hatchet Road, from this point on there are no signs to guide the way. As you head down Hatchet Road look for a road on the left just before the bend in the road; take that road, some maps show it as C019 but its no longer a county road, its a HC-4WD Road. Stay on C019, also called Hatchet Ranch Rd on some maps as it heads generally east, passing on the northside of Doyle Peak. Along the way you will encounter an abandoned car, about a quarter mile past it look for a 4WD road (N31.7649, W108.2232) on the right, its shown on maps. Take that road and stay on it to the next intersection (large white sign), then go right. This road does not show up on maps. Stay on the road, it will head west then south then southwest to an intersection that does show up on maps as C019. Go left and stay on it until the road becomes washed out which is about a mile from Peak 5483. What remains of the road serves as a trail that takes you to the northern ridge of Pk 5483. Best to look at a satellite view of the road network before heading out to understand the maze. A word of warning, I checked out several of the roads that are on maps, very sharp ascent/descent angles through washes is an issue. And even worse, the roads peter out or become impassable due to sand/washouts. I even spent a couple hours digging myself out. Not a place to be doing that alone.
