" started from the Assos village square, hiking up to the narrow neck of land that connects the hill to the mainland, now occupied by a car park. I then took the paved route that zig-zags up the eastern flank of the hill to the castle main gateway, with splendid views on the ascent. I headed south on the trail, leaving it to climb up to the south top on a faint path through the undergrowth, on which sits a large bastion above a terrace, scattered with rubble after the devastating 1953 earthquake on the island - the castle was very badly damaged. The Kefalonia Anavasi map (published 2019) shows a 154m trig point on this terrace. I found no trace of this - possibly damaged and removed after the earthquake. The bastion was not climbable, but I reached the highest natural point. I then headed down to the trail, taking it north past the main gateway to investigate the north top of the hill. On this sits a ruined watchtower, with fine views. My GPS trail showed this to be 11m higher than the south top - so, as a conservative estimate, I put the summit as 160m+, at 38.38361N; 20.53408E.
