With Robin and Geraldine Howie. After visiting Lofoten Islands we went by bus to Kaljord, including the Fiskebøl-Melbu ferry. We left Kaljord about 14:40 initially following a motorable track, but soon a narrow footpath along Lonkanfjorden. The path is waymarked with blue paint marks but is not always obvious. It seemed little used and was very wet, both underfoot and because of tall wet grass. Flies were a considerable nuisance. We reached the vicinity of Nordbtn and joined an old tramway used by miners. This made progress much easier. No doubt swollen by recent rain the main stream in Norddalen was very full. The path crossed the stream several times with several missing bridges. The miners’ tramway came to an end and with it the blue waymarks. Thereafter the path is marked by cairns and red waymarks from time to time. The path climbs steeply up to Memuruskaret (pass) at 519m. The route then goes northwards crossing snowfields from time to time on the slopes of Memurutind. It crosses the valley coming from the lake of Øvre Møysalv. We reached the Møysalen glacier and followed a very faint track along the side. Geraldine did not like the steep slope it contoured so she and Robin went back and went over a subsidiary top to the west. I continued and joined them at the col between the subsidiary top and Møysalen. Here scrambling started. We could see an easier, lower line on the glacier below. There are a few fixed chains, not really needed. We reached a small glacier near the summit with steep slopes on either side. After some debate as to whether to use the rope we decided, since we only had one ice axe, that it would be safest to go to the summit one at a time using the ice axe. I reached the summit at 21:55. Robin was there about 22:15 but Geraldine decided not to do it. We descended very quickly to Memuruskaret and spent the night there. We were expecting rain both by forecast and by signs in the sky and we had a wet night. At 1am (12 midnight without Summer time) it was still light as day. Alarms were set for 4:30am, not that there was much sleep. We left at 05:00 and retraced our outward route more or less. We reached Kaljord about 08:30.
