Hiker with my sister Kellie. This summit would be number 41 of 46 towards her goal of becoming an ADK46er. We started early around 8am from upper works. It was snowing and would continue to snow all day long only stopping when we got on the northway heading home. Neither of us had hiked from Upper Works before (I had completed Marshall from the Loj via Avalanche Pass on my 46er quest). We were the only tracks after the turnoff for Indian Pass, so we knew we would most likely be breaking trail all day. the trail conditions were deplorable since the fresh snow was just covering large mud puddles and ankle deep mud. The conditions would prove to be tough all day. We made decent time to the flowed lands after a quick stop to check out the Henderson Memorial. After that it was smooth sailing to the start of the Herbert Brook Herd Path. This herd path was really tough, nobody had been up there since the snow, so we didn't get the benefit of following someone's tracks. The snow was really deep, up to the knees in most places, and we were on and off the true herd path on the way up since it was hard to follow. We eventually made the summit since we made it before our agreed upon turnaround time, but we didn't stay long, just a photo or two and back down. We made a lot better time once we were following our tracks. We needed to put headlamps on for the last two hour to the car on dead legs from breaking trail through heavy snow all day.
